Does your septic tank need to be emptied?

Date:

Whether you’ve had a tank for years, or a new septic system, you need to know the telltale signs of a full tank.

We know it isn’t the best of subjects to talk about, but it is an important one nonetheless. Spotting these signs can help you save a lot of money and keep your tank in working order.

What should you look out for?

Slow Draining

This is commonly the first thing to be noticed. You will find this affects all your drainage in the house. All sinks, baths and showers will have the same issue.

If you are only experiencing slow draining in one area, then it is more than likely not your tank, and is an issue with that specific drain system.

Backups

Not a very pleasant thing to have happen but is an obvious sign of a full tank. Your lower placed drains will start to back up and possibly leak. This means drains located in a basement could overflow and spill out into the immediate area. It is not only lower drains that can be affected all drains could backup and leak.

A cleanup crew would definitely be required if this was to happen! Say goodbye to any white carpets!

Odors

You don’t need us to tell you that an overflowing tank will smell, however if this smell is making its way up your drains and inside the property, then your tank is definitely full!

A properly functioning septic tank should not be causing any sort of smell, and especially not inside your home.

Vegetation

This not something people would normally look for or pick up on as a sign of a full tank. If your tank is overflowing, then you may notice the patch around your tank turning into a jungle.

The nutrients inside your septic tank are perfect for any plant or vegetation to grow!

Gurgling

No, it’s not a drain monster, its your septic tank telling you it’s full!

This sound will normally happen when flushing the toilet or draining the bath. This sound is not always caused by a full tank; however, it is best to have your drains checked over immediately before it is too late.
